Erin and Kevin met and attended college in Rhode Island and Newport quickly became their favorite town. They wanted to share that special place with those they love and decided to get married at The Regatta Place in Newport, RI. / Images by Julia Jane Studios | Submitted via: Matchology.
Says Erin, “Newport is our favorite vacation town and we’ve been going with friends ever since college so we knew we wanted our wedding to be as authentically ‘Newport’ as possible while being laid back enough to reflect our style. When we found our venue, The Regatta Place, it all fell into place.
The Regatta Place is on a working marina [and] the ceremony is under a big coral tent with a big white marina building backdrop with bright azure blue window shades. It was very ‘Santorini’ inspired which helped me make all other choices. I wanted a laid back, bohemian style dress that I would feel good and relaxed in. Wedding dress shopping was not my favorite! Usually, I like to shop alone and try everything on. But Wedding Atelier helped ground me and find something in my budget. For my shoes, I went with feminine espadrilles from Soludos to keep to my relaxed, bohemian vibes.
I wanted a very bright, natural look with a lot of greenery. Anchor and Grace was a recommendation from a friend and she did an AMAZING job. The pictures say it all! I also wanted a flower crown. I didn’t give her much direction and she came with a green blueberry crown – it was so unique and beautiful!
I had a really fun time creating my invitations from scratch with a free-lance graphic designer. I had a vision of a lot of hand-drawn details and she made it come to life. She made a hand drawn customized map of Newport that I will have forever!
The ceremony was so special and intimate. We were married by a mutual best friend (and neighbor) who has witnessed our relationship develop first-hand. He wrote a very special and funny ceremony. Right after our ceremony Kevin and I had time in our wedding suite alone together to soak it all in.
How did you meet? Kevin and I met at Providence College our freshman year, which has made Rhode Island a special spot for us ever since. For many years we were great friends until we made things official in 2015.
Proposal story? We scheduled a trip to St. Lucia for Kevin’s birthday, which served as a great disguise for an (unexpected) proposal. Kevin proposed after dinner on our last night getting down on one knee on the beach. I was completely surprised! We brought a bottle of champagne back to our room and called our parents right after. It was super special. We woke up the next morning and got couples massages that Kevin had scheduled.
Advice? Concentrate on what you care about and don’t blow anything out of proportion! Your day is your day no matter the details. Make sure you plan for an event where you can relax, be you, and enjoy having all of your favorite people in the world with you. Specifically, don’t get overwhelmed by customs or tradition. Do what you care about, not what the internet says :). And, take advantage of recommendations. A Newport wedding was not a ‘unique’ choice and almost all of our vendors were recommendations from various friends and connections!
