Morgan and Connor married in early fall at the Siasconset Union Chapel on Nantucket followed by a reception at Sankaty Head Golf Club. The wild beauty of the island – from the ocean, to the dunes, to the moors, ponds, and forests, became the crowning inspiration for the wedding decor and Nantucket Island Events harnessed that idea and brought the vision to life along with organic floral arrangements by Sheila Daume. / Images by Liz Banfield.
Says Morgan, “My Dad grew up spending summers on Nantucket, and the island has always been a special place for my family … so much so, that Connor proposed there over Labor Day Weekend! October is an especially magical time on Nantucket. After the summer crowds have dispersed, the island gets quiet and it feels like you have the place to yourself. Over our wedding weekend, you couldn’t go anywhere without seeing groups of our guests. It felt like the whole island had been taken over by all the people we loved!
What was your vision for the wedding? The natural beauty of Nantucket was the biggest inspiration. Although it’s a tiny island, almost half of it is preserved for conservation and there’s so much to explore: from ocean, to beaches, to moors, to ponds, to forests. That wild beauty has always felt romantic to me, and I really wanted to bring that feeling into the wedding. The florals and palette were inspired by the landscape, and the colors that you see there as late summer turns into fall.
From a decor perspective, we wanted to create a vibe that encouraged guests to relax and have fun, and wasn’t too fancy or ‘done’ … kind of like a festive dinner party. I was having trouble finding rentals that fit the vibe we were going for, so we actually purchased a lot of the decor from vintage shops and Ebay. We gifted pieces to vendors and guests after the wedding, but we still have a number of brass candlesticks, hurricanes, and ginger jars in our attic, eagerly awaiting the next party!
How did you meet? We met in Pittsburgh where we were working for the same company at our first ‘real’ jobs. Connor will tell you that he knew we were going to get married the first time he saw me at a party, but it was almost a year until we went on our first date (which ended up Easter Sunday brunch, oddly enough!).
1) Making a long weekend out of the festivities helped the wedding weekend not go by quite so quickly (although it still felt like it was over in the blink of an eye!). There were so many special moments over the course of the wedding weekend, from a trip to Sankaty Light for the wedding party on Friday to farewell drinks on Sunday at one of our favorite places, Cisco Brewery (where even our dog, Nellie, got to join in the fun!).
2) We’d decided not to do a first look and were so glad we went that route. Seeing Connor’s expression when I was walking down the aisle was such an emotional moment.
3) Connor’s siblings, best man, and father, and my matrons of honor and parents all gave the most heartfelt, funny, touching toasts throughout the weekend. They were sweet, sentimental, and full of surprises. My eyes weren’t dry for a single one!
Where did you honeymoon? December we went to Florblanca in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica. Learning to surf has been one of my New Year’s resolutions for years!
