Classic Wedding at Chatham Beach and Tennis Club

Emily and Scott married at the Chatham Beach and Tennis Club, a location that has been special to the bride’s family for generations. After the couple said their “I do’s” on the beach, they enjoyed a tented reception planned by Jyl Deering and BeachPlum Floral on the front lawn of the club. / Images by Arielle Doneson.

Says Emily, “This club has been a part of the bride’s family for many generations. Her grandparents were members back in the 30’s and enjoyed many clambakes and tennis matches. The venue not only holds a very special place in our hearts but also the town of Chatham is very important to us. There is such effortless beauty everywhere you look. And that was a major theme of the day. We wanted it to feel like we were throwing an intimate dinner party in our backyard surrounded by our closest friends and family. We wanted the backdrop of the beach and horizon to do a lot of the work for us.

The jewelry I kept simple. Just my mother’s wedding ring which I hold close to my heart since her passing 10 years ago.

Tell us about the moment you knew you had found your dress. I had decided on spending an afternoon in Boston with my two sisters and step-mom. We had gone to a few beautiful boutique salons and most of the dresses I tried on I absolutely loved but I still felt it necessary to keep looking. I heard through many of my closest friends who had already gotten married about a place in Watertown, Mass., just outside of Boston called Vows bridal shop. Vows is a sample sale bridal shop that takes gowns off the runway, and you can purchase them right off the floor. There are hundreds of different designers to choose from, but only one gown in a sample sale size. You don’t have to wait months for the dress to arrive from the designer, but once the dress is gone it is gone. I tried on a slew of major designers and also styles I never thought I would like. They were all exquisite, however, the moment I put my gown on for the first time I knew immediately it was the one. Everyone will tell you when you know, you know. And it is the truth. My Lazaro wedding gown is still my favorite dress I’ve ever worn.

I loved the soft pink cloths on the cocktail tables. The raw bar with freshly shucked local oysters and clams was a must, given the location and access to fresh local seafood. I loved the lounge-like setting created by adding warmth from decorative pillows on the unsuspecting tennis benches as well as soft candle light and very naturally beautiful farm tables inside the tent for dinner.

Advice? We decided that it was truly important for us to make sure we allowed for a moment to ourselves after the ceremony and pictures but before dinner and our entrance into the tent. We told our wedding planner and bridal party that we were not to be interrupted for 10 minutes, looking into each others eyes with a glass of champagne allowing ourselves to have a high five moment of “holy sh**! We’re married!” [It] was a true blessing and a moment we would never change. To every curious bride and groom, make this a priority. I can promise you, you won’t regret it. Another small but vital piece of advice is to create a wedding e-mail. If you’re anything like me, I get a hundred junk e-mails a day, so having a separate account for communication between my wedding planner and vendors made everything easier, especially the longer the planning went on. Folders and sub-folders are essential with keeping organized, especially with contracts and inspo boards!”
