Country Club Wedding in Prouts Neck, Maine
Maddy and John had a September wedding at St. James Church in Prouts Neck, Maine, followed by a reception at Prouts Neck Country Club. Maine had come to hold many memories for the couple – Maddy’s family had summered there for generations, Maddy and John said their first “I love yous” and John later proposed – so it was the perfect place to share a celebration of their love with family and friends. They chose a subtle coastal theme with grey, navy, green and ivory brought to life by Cairn Events. / Images by Brea McDonald Photography.

Says the couple, “We got married at Prouts Neck, a small community in Maine where Maddy’s family has been spending summers for generations. The ceremony was held at Saint James Episcopal Church where Maddy was baptized and the reception was at the Prouts Neck Country Club, where Maddy and John enjoy playing tennis and golf with friends and family. We chose Maine because it holds many memories and milestones for us – it is the place John met Maddy’s family for the first time, where we said ‘I love you’ for the first time, and where John proposed. We wanted to share this special place with those who are nearest and dearest to us. The style was chosen to reflect the Maine coast without being nautical. We wanted to highlight the natural beauty of the rocky coastline with grey, navy, green, and white. We chose beach rocks for place cards, raw wooden chairs, and lots of tea lights so the sea breeze wouldn’t blow out the candles!

Tell us about your dress. I found my dress at the third bridal boutique I visited – L’elite in Boston. Only had two requirements – that I could dance the night away and that I felt like myself. When I tried on this lace fit and flare dress by Monique L’hullier it just felt right. My mom immediately started crying and that was it. I paired it with a Vera Wang belt that was a gift from my bridesmaids and earrings and bracelet that were my grandmother’s.  One of our favorite memories from our wedding day was having our ‘first look’ in the same spot that we got engaged – the rocky beach on Checkley Point. It brought us full circle and helped us remember the many, many reasons that we decided to start on this wild journey together. Another favorite memory was walking to the church with our bridal party before the ceremony. It was a very special moment for us to breath, reflect, and get the jitters out before walking down the aisle.  Two things that we love to do as a couple are eat and dance, so we knew that those would be two of our priorities in the wedding planning process. It was important to us to provide our guests with delicious local food and an amazing band to dance the night away to. We had heard Soul City Band preform in Boston at the Summer In The City series and knew right away they were the band for us. They were so engaging and had the crowd on their feet the entire night. They even learned our first dance song – Carolina In My Mind by James Taylor – since it was not in their song list. We found Dandelion after a recommendation from our wedding planner, the amazing Heather Cuzzi, and were thrilled with their family-centric business model, delicious locally sourced produce, attention to detail, and dietary accommodations. They were so wonderful and easy to work with and made our foodie dreams come true.
We were committed to having a wedding that not only celebrated our love for each other, but also our love for our family and friends. We close a menu that reflected Maddy’s Maine roots and John’s southern culture, invited John’s family minister from Chapel Hill to officiate the ceremony, Maddy’s cousin painted the artwork for the Save the Date and the program, one of our best friends and bridesmaids designed the wedding logo, Maddy’s mom handmade all of the cloth napkins, and we included favorite elements from our family members who could not be with us in the décor, such as John’s mom’s favorite flowers and Maddy’s grandmother’s jewelry.

Advice? Wedding planning can be all-consuming. We made the conscious decision to take a day every week leading up to the wedding to just be together – whether going out for dinner, going for a walk, or sitting on the couch – without talking about the wedding. It helped us stay connected and not get caught up in all of the details. Credits: Photographer: Brea McDonald Photography | Ceremony Venue: St. James Church | Reception Venue: Private Club Prouts Neck | Event Design and florals: Cairn Events | Wedding Gown: Monique Lhuillier | Groom’s Attire: Tom James | Bride’s jewelry and shoes: Badgley Mischka | Bridesmaids’ attire: J.
