Katie and Mark’s beautiful Nantucket wedding faced some weather-related challenges in the form of Hurricane Jose which left the couple and many guests stuck in Hyannis for several days. Thankfully, there was a window of calm in the skies and their plane finally was cleared to take off and the wedding day went off without a hitch. The couple enjoyed a quintessential foggy Nantucket day, tying the knot at Siasconset Chapel followed by a reception at the Nantucket Golf Club. Inside the tented reception, the warm glow of candlelight mingled with stunning floral arrangements by Soiree Floral in blush, ivory and magenta tones. / Photography by Zofia & Co.
Some of my favorite special touches were our family friend’s antique car that drove us to the reception. My invitations and paper materials were also one of my favorite touches, we brought together the nautical spirit of Nantucket, and old world whaling and mermaids – classic colors like navy and white. We had a special map created for our guests, many of which have never been to Nantucket so they could find their way. The gift bag for guests had our favorite items like Something Natural Cookies, and the chocolate from Sweet Inspirations, and two pennies to throw at the ferry upon their departure.
Favorite memories included those leading up to the wedding. We were stuck in Hyannis at the Inn for 3 days unable to get to Nantucket by ferry. In those three days, we panicked, cried, made plans to re-schedule the wedding, and then a window of calm weather came and the plane was cleared to take off. One of the nights we were stranded, we went to the Black Cat Tavern, the live band was playing and Katie got up to sing with the band. There were a series of other coincidences that tried our luck! We stayed in room number 13, we hung out at the Black Cat Tavern when stranded, the hurricane circumvented the island of Nantucket for 3 days and was the most unprecedented storm! When we landed in Hawaii for our honeymoon, we woke up to the missile threat text message saying “This is not a drill” and though we took that seriously we laughed afterwards that our luck could be this challenged! Our last name is Fortunato which means lucky which makes all of this hilarious!
One very very special memory from the wedding day was this butterfly that landed right next to us during Mark’s family photos. Mark’s family believes (and we’ve witnessed before!) their beloved grandmother coming back as a butterfly. Grammy passed away just one year before. This is no coincidence – after three days of hurricane, and no living thing in site, how did this butterfly get to be in the family picture right as we we’re taking it with his family? It was a miracle! We all witnessed it.
Advice? Katie is a conference and event planner for The Wall Street Journal & Dow Jones and had everything planned and detailed down to the minute – the plan is, it’s not going to be your plan!
