Blue Wedding at Nantucket’s White Elephant

Blue Wedding at Nantucket’s White Elephant Kate and Billy had a classic seaside wedding at the White Elephant on Nantucket. Their soothing color palette of blues and whites accented the venue nicely and Soiree Floral created a stunning ceremony arch that overlooked the sea. / Images by Rebecca Love Photography.

Says the couple, “Kate was born and raised outside Boston, going to the Cape and islands during the summers. We started our search around the Boston area, but the potential venues we looked at did not feel right. The venues were too big or had no personal connection. We started reflecting on a trip we took together to Nantucket and thought, “It would be fun to have our friends and family all gather in a place we love so much.” We were delighted to find that the White Elephant could provide a relaxed and elegant setting, including a beautiful waterfront view and seaside charm. Although we added some small enhancements such as flowers, the venue was simple and perfect without requiring significant embellishments.

I ordered my dress online. When it arrived, I tried it on and loved it but realized I had nothing to compare it to. A few weeks later, I tried on wedding dresses at a local bridal store and realized I already had the dress; it just needed a few alterations.

Billy’s favorite memory was that of marrying Kate but thinks Kate’s favorite memory might be eating the cake. We both agree, the best part of the day besides the wedding itself (and the cake) was being surrounded by our friends and family. Our wedding party included our siblings, our nephew was the ring bearer, Billy’s Aunt Donna read a selected reading, and our friend Brian (the CEO of the company at which Kate works) officiated our wedding. Having someone who knew us officiate our wedding was like icing on the cake. But seriously, Kate still comments that she wants more wedding cake from time to time. (Magee, if you’re reading this, please send gluten-free cake!)

Kate & Billy’s Love Story | We met on Valentine’s Day in 2010 through a mutual friend at a U.S. Masters swim meet. It was Kate’s first swim meet in over four years since college. Billy was trying to relive the glory days of his college swimming years. After Kate swam more than three seconds faster than Billy in the 100 backstroke, Billy realized he might need to train a little harder (and not race Kate immediately after another grueling race). Kate decided she might actually like to train. A week later, we became teammates. Months later we began dating, and we’ve been swimming through life together ever since.

We thought everything was phenomenal from the flowers to the music to the food. We loved that the wedding was on the water and that some clouds rolled in right before our ceremony, which added more color and beauty to the view. We were also delighted that The Nantucket Bake Shop could accommodate Kate’s request for a gluten-free cake. But the most special part of our wedding day was having all of our family and close friends come together to celebrate with us. We had friends and family we had not seen in years make the trip and it meant the world to us.
