Says Alison, “From the minute we got engaged, Steven and I knew we wanted to get married on New England’s waterfront. As soon as we saw it, we immediately fell in love with the Bohlin at the Newport Yachting Center. The dockside terrace was under construction the first time we saw it, but the impeccable views captured our hearts instantly. The semi-permanent Sperry tent on the edge of the water was the perfect setting for our vision of a classic, simple, coastal-chic wedding.
Tell us about your dress. I had tried on about a million dresses and had been to way to many shops all around New England when my mom suggested we go to L’elite on Newbury street in Boston. They carried Amsale which I hadn’t tried on yet. The first dress I tried on by Amsale I loved but something wasn’t quite right. Then, I tried on my dress and FINALLY had that feeling that brides always talk about. It was perfectly simple and classic and exactly what I wanted. My sister took a video of me in the dress which I watched every single day until my actual dress came in!
Alison & Steven’s Love Story | Steven and I first met at Fenway Park during a Red Sox game. We attended the game separately and were brought together by mutual friends. We sat next to each other and flirted the entire game. We met again when the Queen Mary II was docked at Castle Island in Boston for it’s final voyage. There were instant fireworks. No, really, there were actual fireworks as we sat in the grass getting to know each other. We quickly learned we had a lot in common and started dating regularly, despite being very busy with family vacations and out of state work trips. We bonded over our mutual love for food and started Tuesday date nights, which meant trying a new restaurant every week. Soon, we were spending all our free time together and it wasn’t long before we knew we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together.
Favorite memories? It’s hard to even pick out a few! Steven whisked me away right after our ceremony for some time to ourselves to soak it all in! It was such a special moment for us. I think every single one of our guests joined us on the dance floor, including my 87 year old grandma and grandpa. Everyone had a blast dancing the night away. While we were getting the party started on the dance floor, we got an amazing surprise. Fireworks exploded over the iconic Newport Bridge, creating a beautiful backdrop for our party! Favorite special touches? Steven and I kept a secret from everyone including our family! We took dance lessons and didn’t tell anyone our first dance song. It was so fun to have a few surprises for our guests. My grandpa made a very special trip in his white Rolls Royce to deliver me to my groom for our first look. Our guests enjoyed a wicked awesome ‘New England’ themed cocktail hour, complete with a chef attended raw bar, lobster rolls, and Narragansett Creamery Mozzarella stuffed cherry tomatoes. We opted for a Tuscan-style head table with two tall gold pedestals holding a lovely floral mix of blush and white spray and garden roses, hydrangea, peonies, ranunculus and more, while monet stemmed candles illuminated the tent. The firefly lights draping down the roof of the tent put the finishing touches on a perfectly simple and truly magical venue.
Alison’s advice? Do your research! Make sure you read vendor reviews and talk to your vendors to make sure you will get exactly what you want! Keep up communication throughout the process and ask as many questions as possible.
