Charming Nantucket Wedding

Editor’s Note: Couldn’t resist re-sharing this perfect summer wedding on Nantucket!

Stephanie grew up vacationing on Nantucket every year and when Luther proposed on one such summer trip at Steps Beach, the two knew they had to wed on the special island. The two wed at St. Mary’s Church and held their reception at the Siasconset Casino. I love that Luther and the groomsmen donned blue blazers with traditional Nantucket reds from Murray’s Toggery Shop along with darling bowties from Vineyard Vines. Says the bride, “Nantucket has always been a special place to the Wheeler family.  I  have spent time out here every year of my life.  One of my favorite childhood memories is 4-wheel driving to Great Point with my siblings, aunt, uncle, cousins and family friends.  We picnicked, fished, rode in the back of a black Nissan pick-up laughing all the way to the Sconset market for ice-cream after!  This is a tradition I can’t wait to start with my own family. When planning where we wanted to host this special occasion, we were immediately drawn here! As Luther & I begin our life together, we foresee many trips out here with our own family!

One of my most favorite memories was walking the 5-minute walk from my house to the church through town with my Dad.  We have always had a special bond, so to have an extra few minutes together, walking me to marry my best friend, was priceless.  Plus, the cheers we received as we walked past people in town helped calm my nerves!

We both happened to be living in New York on the Upper West Side in 2010 when our paths crossed again. Our mutual friend from college thought we’d be perfect for each other, she insisted we go out together on our own! And after going on a few dates, we were inseparable.  Our first date together was at a bar called Prohibition on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.  Even though Steph was 30 minutes late, we had a great time as we realized we shared many similarities!!  Pretty soon we were spending almost every moment we could together.  And I knew with Steph’s spunkiness, I was never in for a dull moment!  In July of 2013 after vacationing on Nantucket with Steph’s family for several summers, I popped the big question on Steps Beach over a mini bottle of champagne.  I lured her to Steps with the guise that we were headed to the Galley for drinks at sunset. Nantucket has always been important to Steph and the more time we spent out here as a couple, it has become such a special place to both of us! Lots of fond memories of time spent here with each other, family and friends!

I wore silver & diamond earrings in the shape of a flower with a pearl center that belong to my Mom and were originally my Grandmother’s.  As my Mom did, we wrapped my Grandmother’s lace handkerchief around my flowers for the walk down the aisle.

PhotographyOne of my favorite touches was the Brant Point Penny we handed out to the guests at the reception.  Tradition has it, when you leave Nantucket on the ferry, you throw a penny over as you round Brant Point & make a wish for your return trip. My Aunt put the penny in a white, small tulle bag & tied it attaching the poem ‘Tossing a penny when out you ride, brings you back on another tide.’ She then gathered all pennies in a Nantucket Basket & had our 5 & 6 year old flower girls  hand them out to the guests at the reception.

Nantucket Wedding by Zofia & Co. PhotographyTell us about the moment you knew you had found *your* dress. How did you know? It was the third time I had gone to try on dresses. I had fallen in love with one while I was up in Boston visiting some of my bridesmaids. When I took my Mom to see it, it wasn’t as I remembered & the material was too delicate for the cobblestones of Nantucket!  Alison at Plumed Serpent Bridal took it from there! She suggested a dress that was similar in style- a ruched trumpette silhouette, but this Paloma Blanca dress was made in silk jacquard fabric. When I walked out into the boutique, the look on my Mom & Aunt’s faces let me I know I was going to like what I was about to see!  I absolutely loved it when I looked in the mirrors!  I walked around the store a bit & caught a glimpse of myself in a side mirror and before I  knew it, my eyes were filled with happy tears!  We bought it on the spot! And my favorite part of the dress was the covered buttons all the way down the back!

The ‘Sconset Casino, well known to all Nantuckers & Nantucket go-ers, had the classic island, vintage feel. Despite the name, it is not a real Casino!  It was one of the few indoor venues that was a raw space. We wanted to design every aspect of the decor for the reception.  Growing up in CT & spending a lot of time out in Nantucket during my childhood, my go-to style has always been preppy! We wanted to create an environment our guests would feel comfortable in, enjoy delicious food & dance the night away with us!

The Groom’s favorite memory was taking the pictures.  It was right after we were married & we had our closet family & friends celebrating with us. His favorite photo opp was at the cocktail hour at the Casino where we had all of the guests gather on the deck for a group photo.  Looking at that photo now, all of these special family & friends supporting us on our day, makes us feel so loved.

Stephanie leaves us with some bridal advice, “Don’t sweat the small stuff- expect little things to not go as planned – they will and most of the time, your guests will be none the wiser something did not go as planned!”

You would love Nantucket, Gillian! I just visited for the first time in September and was in love. I keep meaning to put together a little travel guide – it’ll be up soon. 😉
