Preppy Picnic Engagement in Sacramento

Preppy Picnic Engagement in Sacramento

Editor’s Note: I hunted through the archives to bring this adorable engagement back!

There are few things as warm and comforting and deliciously preppy as a wool tartan throw. It feels iconic and evokes a very English and very collegiate feel to me – what could be better? Well, maybe spotlighting one in an engagement session?! As soon as I spotted Holly and Shane’s e-sesh, I was already e-mailing Emily {the talented photog} to ask if I could share her lovely photos. Luckily, she obliged:

SONY DSC SONY DSC SONY DSCSays photographer Emily Heizer, “This engagement session was ever-evolving, from the time of its inception. Originally, we planned on snow and a special trip into the mountains. Weather, safety and practicality nipped that in the bud and the idea of a retro-vintage Mad-Men session began to take form. When we began to contact local vendors- Museums, historic hotels- it didn’t quite fall into place though.

SONY DSCWhat we ended up with was something planned quite last minute, but I think something much more reflective of the couple. These weren’t really “props…” As Holly and Shane told me as they sat down in the park, they actually DO this! They picnic! They like to pack a picnic and head somewhere special for some alone time.

SONY DSC SONY DSC SONY DSCThey are both a little [adorably] clumsy and had to be so careful not to spill their wine on each other; bringing this super sophisticated picnic among the camellias down to earth. They didn’t just rip up the baguette and lay it on the plate for the picture- they actually broke it out and had a snack! This wasn’t just about pictures, it was an experience for them. This was their blanket, their picnic basket, and good food that they really enjoyed.

SONY DSCI asked Shane to give Holly a good hug in the meadow and he ran towards her and scooped her up in his arms and spun her around instead. They lived in the moment; the session was a reflection of them, their relationship and what they like to do and how they really are with each other. That’s how it should be and it was beautiful.
