Elegant Wedding at The University of the South

Kat and Dan met and fell in love in Manhattan but they wanted their formal wedding in a setting where their guests would feel relaxed and at ease so they chose the campus of The University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn. – Kat’s alma mater. The couple wed at the beautiful stone All Saints Chapel followed by a reception at The Sewanee InnTaylor’s Mercantile outfitted the affair in lavish arrangements composed of lavender and ivory florals accented by natural greenery. / Images by Cortney Smith.

Sewanee is situated in a small town in the mountains of Tennessee, but has a sense of grandeur to it as well, not to mention natural beauty! We both wanted a formal wedding but in a location that invited our guests to relax and enjoy themselves.

final print-53There were so many special moments and aspects of our wedding that added to the overall joy. In true Southern tradition, we buried a bottle of bourbon a month before our wedding (to keep rain away on the big day)! But when we went to dig it up, we couldn’t find it! Our photographer, Cortney, Dan and I probably spent close to an hour searching for it! We laugh about it now, but at the time Dan was worried someone had found it before us!

final print-81One of my favorite parts of our wedding was having my family’s heirloom handkerchief that all brides going back several generations have carried, and which I had tucked into my bouquet. Each bride who has carried it on her wedding day has signed a piece of stationary, and I loved adding my name and wedding date to that piece of history.

final print-56I found my dress before my husband even proposed! I spotted it on Pinterest one day, and knew that it was exactly what I would want, when my day came. When it came time for me to start looking for my dress, I called the salon in my hometown of Charlotte, NC, and sure enough, they had it! I made myself try on three other dresses before I let myself try on ‘the one,’ just so I could be sure. But when I put it on, and when I walked out to show my family, everyone knew! It just goes to show, you should always trust your instincts 😉

final print-104Dan & Kat’s Love Story | Dan and I have a classic NY love story. Girl walks into a bar…and the rest is history! He likes to say it was love at first sight, and I definitely agree! The cute little bar in the West Village where we met (Bobo) has now become ‘our place’ and is actually where he took me right after he proposed. He’s such a romantic!

final print-123It’s hard to choose only a few favorite memories! Tops on my list would have to be seeing my Mom and my Step-Mom one-on-one once I was in my dress. We laughed and cried and prayed together, and I will always cherish those memories. Then my Daddy came in and I climbed into his lap like I used to do when I was a child – wedding dress and all! Our photographer captured this moment perfectly, and I have the image framed. Our ceremony was so special. We really put a lot of thought and love into what we said, sang, and what was read. I will never forget looking out into the congregation and seeing the faces of everyone who is special to us both, there supporting us and lifting us up with their love. Our reception was a blast and lasted until 2 am! I’ll never forget getting up on stage with my two cousins, and dancing our hearts out to ‘Proud Mary!’

final print-45The best piece of advice I received during wedding planning was to make planning a fun-filled team activity. Work with your fiance, and always ask his opinion, because guys really do care about a lot of the different aspects. Remember ladies, it’s their day, too.” 🙂

Kat and Dan honeymooned at Blackberry Farm in Walland, Tenn. Such a magical and romantic place!
