Lauren and Greg are high school sweethearts and had been talking about marriage yet Greg still managed to surprise her when he popped the question during a weekend at her parents’ beach house in Connecticut. The two threw a lovely wedding at the Madison Beach Hotel in Old Saybrook, Conn., to celebrate their union. And my favorite detail has to be the personally packaged honey favors from Greg’s family’s honeybee farm! / Images by Katie Slater Photography.
Says Lauren, “I wanted everyone who was traveling to the shore for the wedding to feel like they were on vacation for the day. The venue had a view and feel about it that was so calming and elegant. We had a beautiful ceremony at the Church followed by a fancy day at the beach that turned into a night full of pure joy.
I could not find a dress by the designer I liked in my price range at any of the popular stores. I finally went to a small shop that sells older gowns that were sold to them by big-name stores to make room for the new dresses. I found a simple/older version of the designer dress I had liked. I wanted to make it into a new version I had seen. I went to a fabric store, bought the lace I wanted and had a seamstress add it to the top and bottom of dress. I then added a rhinestone belt to add some flare and it looked just like the newer version. I saved a lot of money and was able to have the designer dress with my own personal style added to it.
Lauren + Greg’s Love Story
My now husband and I were high school sweethearts and had been talking about marriage for years. I thought I would know when the proposal was coming but he managed to completely surprise me. We were in Old Saybrook, Conn., for the weekend at my parents’ beach house. This was the last weekend we would spend together before he left for Alaska to work the entire summer. He recommended we go for a walk down by the water. We walked out to the pier on the private beach. I started to complain about the wind and needing a sweatshirt. He was waiting for people to pass by since he knew I wouldn’t want anyone to see. I turned around, he got down on one knee and held out the ring. He could barely get the words ‘Lauren, will you marry me?’ out he was so full of emotions and nerves. Completely shocked, I said “YES!” That was May 2013 and we were married July 2014.
Greg’s family raises honeybees on their farm. I wanted to make our favors really personal so we ordered 4 ounce jars and jarred 40 pounds of their honey. We topped them off with some faux hydrangea flowers tied on with a hemp string. Our DJ made an announcement letting our guests know where the honey came from. They were a hit!
My favorite part of our wedding day was having all of our loved ones in one place to share in the big moment. It is not often that you are able to gather everyone in one place from both sides and I wouldn’t have traded it for anything. There are times during the planning when you wish you just kept it small to avoid all of the stress but it’s worth it in the end to have everyone celebrating with you.”
